Now trying to maintain fitness cycling due to Covid restrictions.
Generally use the bike for everyday use - shops etc, but have now added in 3 x fitness rides per week - 30mls, 20mls, and 10 miles as fast as I can. Using a hybrid bike, which is not ideal, but have made adjustments to make the thing as comfortable as possible. I tried to re-enact gym spin classes on the road with some success, doing interval training in the first 30/45 mins of the rides, with 5 mins sprints, rest, out of saddle intervals.
Using roughly the same circuit, the first half sector of the rides is mainly elevation in total so def have to be careful not to blow out early.
The route is marked out mile to mins markers on a card, using the times of my best ever 30 mile ride, so I always know if am on target of a PB.
Today was not the day and not sure why because after 5 miles I was down 7 mins! Again the long slow gradient from Claydon to North Ipswich Henley took its toll as it took ages to get my second wind and was 7 mins down after 8 miles.
Recovered on the Ipswich local bypass towards Purdis when I tagged 2 drop heads doing 15mph so stayed with them Heavens knows what the were thinking as I clung on!
Concentrating very hard to keep low and ensure knees were well tucked in we pounded out 4 miles very quick when I turned off for another burn from Purdis on Straight road to the old Felixstowe road, clawing back 3 mins up to the 15 mile mark. The old Felixstowe road was a killer going back to town, because although fairly level, I tried to keep on the big crown wheel and little rear cog, with good speed but turned my legs to jelly - bad decision, should have selected a lower gear!
After 17 miles I lost the plot so had to idle back to 12 mph, which was disappointing. Hit the 20 ml mark - 8 mins off PB, and finished off with a 2 mile warm down.
Nice enjoyable ride with no spills or stop, but have to improve elevation riding and put more effort in at the starts.
Traffic was again very light, so stayed on the road mainly and kept off dirt. Am now enjoying road riding which I disliked because of traffic
Stats today - 21.96 mls - 1hr 47, with the 20ml mark in at 1hr 36, averaging 12.28 mph burning 2k calories. The 105 Hr showed I was pretty lazy. Next is a 10 miler by Sunday. Max downhill speed today was 34 mph!
